Deputy for Hire

8/10

A bankrupt traveling salesman becomes the accidental sheriff of a frontier town so peaceful its citizens secretly hire fake outlaws to attract railroad money—until a real criminal syndicate arrives and mistakes the charade for competition.

A fresh high-concept Western comedy with strong commercial charm, clear escalation, and memorable set pieces, though its broad farcical tone may limit emotional depth and mainstream breakout potential.

Plot

In 1882, overly polished cookware salesman Milton Vane stumbles into the sleepy desert town of Copper Junction after his wagon breaks down. Desperate to qualify for a lucrative railroad stop, the town council has spent years staging harmless fake robberies and theatrical gunfights to appear “dangerous but economically promising.” When the beloved pretend sheriff dies from an allergic reaction during a staged duel, the townspeople mistake Milton’s sales pitch theatrics for lawman bravado and appoint him temporary sheriff.

Milton quickly discovers that every outlaw in town is an accountant, beekeeper, or church pianist in costume. Their carefully choreographed crimes keep tourists entertained and investors interested. But the scam spirals out of control when the Red Coyote Gang, a ruthless crew of actual train thieves, rolls into Copper Junction believing they’ve found rival criminals muscling into their territory. Forced to maintain the illusion, Milton trains the hilariously incompetent townsfolk in fake intimidation tactics while secretly trying to outsmart the gang without revealing that nobody in town can actually shoot.

As tensions rise toward the annual Frontier Days festival, Milton realizes the town’s absurd performance has become the only thing holding the struggling community together. During a chaotic showdown involving exploding pie tins, malfunctioning parade cannons, and a staged bank robbery that accidentally turns real, the citizens weaponize their theatrical skills to humiliate and capture the Red Coyotes. With the railroad secured and Copper Junction thriving, Milton rejects a return to city life and accepts his unlikely role as sheriff of the weirdest town in the West.

Poster Prompt

A cinematic comedy-western poster featuring Milton Vane, a nervous but determined man in a spotless cream-colored salesman suit awkwardly wearing an oversized sheriff badge and slightly crooked cowboy hat. He stands in the dusty main street of Copper Junction holding a frying pan like a weapon while behind him townsfolk in fake outlaw costumes stage an exaggerated gunfight. In the background, real dangerous bandits on horseback approach through a glowing desert sunset. Warm orange and gold lighting contrasts with playful pops of turquoise and red storefront signs. Mood is adventurous, chaotic, and comedic with classic Western framing, dynamic motion, drifting dust clouds, and expressive character faces. Visual style blends the polished cinematic energy of modern ensemble comedies with authentic frontier textures.
