The Gravity Saints

9/10

When a disgraced superhero priest assembles a crew of ex-villains to steal a collapsing city’s artificial gravity core, they must pull off the impossible before the floating metropolis crashes into the ocean below.

A visually striking fusion of superhero myth, sci-fi heist, and disaster thriller with strong commercial appeal and coherent stakes, though a few familiar genre elements keep it from feeling completely groundbreaking.

Plot

High above the Atlantic drifts Ascension, a floating sanctuary-city powered by a sacred reactor known as the Halo Core. For decades, the city’s elite order of superheroes — the Saints — have claimed the Core is divinely sustained by their powers. But after former Saint Mateo Vale discovers the reactor is actually failing from years of corruption and energy theft, he’s cast out and blamed for the city’s growing gravity storms. When the ruling Saints secretly begin evacuating the wealthy and abandoning millions below, Mateo decides the only way to save Ascension is to steal the Halo Core itself before the council can weaponize its collapse.

Mateo assembles a desperate heist crew made entirely of disgraced powered criminals: a woman who can flatten gravity into razor-thin fields, a teleporting safecracker trapped in five-second jumps, a retired super-speed getaway driver with failing nerves, and a mute engineer whose body absorbs kinetic force. Their target lies inside the Basilica Vault, a cathedral suspended upside down beneath the city, protected by biometric relics, anti-power sanctums, and the remaining Saints — living celebrities who can manipulate mass and momentum like gods. As the crew infiltrates galas, maintenance tunnels, and airborne freight routes, public faith in the Saints begins collapsing into riots while violent gravity distortions tear entire districts from the sky.

During the final break-in, Mateo learns the Halo Core cannot simply be stolen — it must bond permanently to a living host willing to endure crushing planetary forces. Betrayed by one of his crew and hunted through a collapsing cathedral rotating above the ocean, Mateo sacrifices himself by merging with the Core, stabilizing Ascension long enough for civilians to escape. But instead of dying, he becomes something mythic: a human gravity anchor drifting beneath the rebuilt city, while his surviving crew expose the Saints’ lies to the world and disappear into legend as the thieves who stole a miracle.

Poster Prompt

A cinematic sci-fi superhero heist poster featuring Mateo Vale, a rugged Latino man in his late 40s with silver-streaked dark hair, worn priest-like tactical robes, and glowing gravitational fractures across his hands, standing on the underside of a floating city cathedral suspended above a stormy ocean. Around him: a diverse outlaw crew in sleek gravity-tech gear descending on cables through rotating architecture. In the sky above, the radiant floating metropolis of Ascension glows gold and white while sections crumble into the clouds. Blue gravity distortions bend light around the characters. Color palette of deep cobalt, storm-gray, gold, and neon violet. Dramatic high-contrast lighting, rain and debris suspended unnaturally in midair. Mood is epic, desperate, and rebellious. Visual style blends grounded sci-fi realism with mythic superhero scale, inspired by Denis Villeneuve and comic-book cathedral imagery.
