The Auction of Silent Names

9/10

A court-certified lip reader infiltrates an underground auction where criminals buy and sell erased identities, only to discover her missing brother is being auctioned as a living witness.

A highly original thriller with strong cinematic hooks, commercial intrigue, and tense worldbuilding, though the identity-swap mechanics risk becoming overly complex if not tightly executed.

Plot

Mara Vale, a meticulous forensic lip reader for the Chicago court system, is pulled off routine testimony when a federal agent shows her silent security footage from an illegal gathering no microphone managed to record. Reading lips from blurred projections, Mara uncovers references to a hidden marketplace called the Quiet Exchange, where corrupt executives, fugitives, and political operatives purchase entirely new identities built from stolen biometric histories. When she recognizes her long-missing brother in the footage, alive but terrified, she enters the Exchange undercover as a translator for deaf clients moving through the criminal network.

The Exchange operates inside abandoned luxury condos beneath a half-finished riverfront development, where every deal is conducted in silence to avoid surveillance. Mara discovers the organization is run by Lucien Thorne, a charismatic former disaster-response coordinator who began stealing identities from victims displaced by floods, fires, and evacuations years earlier. As Mara digs deeper, she learns her brother was never kidnapped—he was a financial analyst who discovered the Exchange had quietly replaced judges, police informants, and even murder victims to collapse criminal cases nationwide. With assassins monitoring every gesture and hidden cameras tracking body language, Mara must communicate through coded eye movements and staged arguments while deciding whether her brother can still be trusted.

After a violent blackout traps hundreds of buyers and sellers inside the unfinished tower during a citywide storm, Mara triggers chaos by broadcasting live projections revealing the real identities of everyone in attendance. Thorne escapes with a portable archive containing thousands of fabricated lives, forcing Mara and her brother into a brutal pursuit through flooded lower levels of the building. In the final confrontation, Mara exposes Thorne by reading his confession through security glass after he deliberately cuts all audio, turning his own obsession with silence against him. The Exchange collapses publicly, but the final scene reveals one surviving bidder calmly assuming the identity of a dead federal agent, hinting the network may never fully disappear.
