In the vertical city of Bellfare, every citizen deposits portions of their lifespan into ornate clockwork birds that roost inside the colossal central clocktower, allowing the wealthy to literally buy extra time. Orla, a shy teenage watchmaker’s apprentice, discovers her struggling neighborhood has been secretly drained of decades by the city’s elegant ruler, Chancellor Vale, who plans to auction the stolen years to immortal elites during the annual Midnight Parade. When Orla’s grandmother suddenly ages forty years overnight, she joins a washed-up crew of retired thieves known as the Pickpockets—former masters of acrobatic rooftop robberies now considered too old to matter.
The crew’s plan is absurdly ambitious: infiltrate the moving inner mechanisms of the clocktower during the parade, navigate rotating gear districts populated by sentient maintenance puppets, and release thousands of captive mechanical birds carrying stolen lifespans. As the heist unfolds across dazzling animated set pieces—swinging pendulums over glowing city streets, upside-down train chases inside spinning clock faces, and silent break-ins through frozen seconds of halted time—Orla learns the birds have developed personalities from the memories they carry. Meanwhile, Chancellor Vale accelerates the city clock itself, threatening to permanently erase Bellfare’s poorest citizens by aging them into dust before sunrise.
Inside the tower’s hidden heart, Orla discovers the city’s entire economy depends on harvested time and that destroying the system could collapse Bellfare completely. Instead of detonating the tower as planned, she orchestrates a chaotic redistribution: unleashing the birds into the sky during the parade, where they rain stolen years back onto the citizens below. The city erupts into surreal age reversals and restored memories while the Pickpockets make one final escape across collapsing clock hands. In the aftermath, Bellfare abandons its time market, and Orla transforms the once-feared clocktower into a public sanctuary where no one’s life can be bought again.
