The Choir of False Faces

In the sprawling canal city of Valgrave, identity is everything: every citizen’s face is life-cast at birth and archived in a heavily guarded government repository known as The Choir. Mara Venn, once the nation’s top forensic sculptor, is publicly ruined after a political dissident she reconstructed is executed on falsified evidence. Now she survives forging black-market disguises for petty criminals in the flooded undercity. When her estranged brother is framed for a massacre by someone wearing his exact biometric likeness, Mara discovers the horrifying truth: corrupt officials are secretly using stolen facial molds to manufacture criminals, erase witnesses, and rewrite entire legal histories.

Desperate to clear her brother’s name, Mara assembles an uneasy crew of specialists: a mute lock-picker who communicates through sketchbooks, a celebrity embalmer with access to elite death records, a teenage pickpocket who memorizes faces after one glance, and a disgraced choir conductor who once designed the vault’s acoustic security system. Their target is The Choir itself—a cathedral-like archive where tens of thousands of porcelain facial casts sing with coded resonance whenever intruders move through the halls. As the crew infiltrates masquerade auctions, corpse-processing ferries, and subterranean mold factories, they uncover a conspiracy reaching into the judiciary and police. Worse, Mara learns her own face was illegally duplicated years ago, and someone using her likeness has committed crimes across the city.

The heist culminates during Valgrave’s annual Festival of Lantern Masks, when the crew breaks into the archive beneath a grand public opera. Inside, Mara discovers the government has been replacing political enemies with fabricated identities for decades, effectively murdering people without killing them. Betrayed by one of her own crew, she triggers the archive’s resonance system, causing thousands of suspended facial molds to crash through the cathedral vault as riots erupt aboveground. Rather than destroy the evidence, Mara broadcasts the entire identity ledger across the city’s projection canals, exposing everyone from judges to gang leaders. By dawn, Valgrave descends into chaos as citizens realize their histories may have been manufactured—but Mara’s brother walks free, and the city can no longer hide behind borrowed faces.
