After fabricating footage early in his career, once-celebrated wildlife filmmaker Adrian Vale is reduced to shooting cheap survival programs until he receives a cryptic invitation from a desert nomad named Lheya. She claims the legendary “saltwings” — massive manta-like creatures that glide across storm currents using mineral sails — are real, but their migration route is about to be destroyed by a multinational lithium operation expanding into the White Expanse. Hoping to restore his reputation with one final truthful documentary, Adrian assembles a tiny film crew and joins Lheya’s caravan on a month-long crossing through corrosive salt storms, abandoned mining towns, and shifting dunes that erase landmarks overnight.
As the expedition progresses, the crew captures increasingly astonishing footage of the saltwings surfing electrified desert winds, while tensions grow between Adrian’s obsession with getting the perfect shot and the caravan’s spiritual duty to remain unseen. The documentary structure evolves as camera operators become participants in survival: batteries fail in magnetic storms, drones crash into crystal canyons, and rival media mercenaries hired by the mining company begin hunting the caravan to suppress evidence that the creatures exist. Adrian discovers the corporation has secretly known about the migration for decades and intentionally concealed ecological collapses caused by their drilling. When Lheya is injured during an ambush near a collapsing salt basin, Adrian must choose between escaping with enough footage to save his career or finishing the journey to help guide the remaining saltwings toward their ancient breeding grounds.
In the final act, the surviving crew abandons conventional filmmaking altogether, using salvaged projector lenses and mirrored kites to redirect a catastrophic industrial sandfire away from the migrating herd. Adrian broadcasts the raw, unedited footage live through hijacked weather satellites as the saltwings rise through a crimson storm wall in front of millions of viewers worldwide. The exposure sparks global outrage, halting the mining operation, but the caravan quietly disappears into the desert before authorities arrive. Months later, Adrian releases the completed film with visible mistakes, arguments, and failures left intact, becoming famous not for capturing a myth, but for finally telling the truth.
