The Velvet Index

In the ornate coastal city-state of Bellaroche, elite clients quietly rely on Mara Vey, a gifted forensic tailor who reconstructs crimes through damaged garments, burn patterns, fibers, and hidden alterations. When a foreign diplomat is found dead in a locked opera box wearing a suit lined with impossible stitching, Mara discovers the garment contains encrypted coordinates woven directly into the seams. The clues point toward an underground network of couture houses secretly trafficking political blackmail, assassination contracts, and state secrets through high fashion.

As Mara follows the trail through private fashion salons, maritime casinos, and invitation-only masquerade auctions, she becomes entangled with Lucien Vale, a disgraced customs investigator accused of selling evidence to criminals. Together they uncover “The Velvet Index,” a hidden catalog linking decades of unsolved murders to specific garments worn on the nights the crimes occurred. The deeper they dig, the more they realize Bellaroche’s wealthiest figures have been literally dressing themselves in evidence no court could ever trace. Meanwhile, a ruthless couturier known only as The Hemmer begins targeting anyone connected to the conspiracy, staging murders as elaborate fashion tableaux.

Mara eventually learns her own late mentor helped create the Index to expose the elite before vanishing years earlier. During the city’s grand Lantern Regatta, where the ruling class parades through the canals in illuminated ceremonial attire, Mara and Lucien orchestrate a public unraveling of the conspiracy by decoding the garments live through projected textile patterns hidden beneath the festival lights. The Hemmer attempts to flee aboard a burning atelier barge, forcing Mara to confront the cost of exposing a city built on elegant corruption. In the aftermath, Bellaroche’s ruling families collapse into scandal, while Mara inherits the archive of coded garments—now holding enough secrets to either reform the city or destroy it completely.
