On the isolated animated island of Noctis Cay, every building, animal, and citizen is fashioned from enchanted wax that must be constantly repaired against the brutal sea winds. Each year during the Festival of Dripping Saints, townsfolk melt small portions of their own bodies into colossal candle effigies lining the harbor walls, believing the ritual keeps away the legendary Wax Tide — a living black ocean that rises only at night. Elia, a shy teenage sculptor apprenticed to the city’s master chandler, begins noticing disturbing details hidden beneath the saints’ glowing faces: trapped eyes blinking inside hardened wax, muffled voices beneath the cathedral floor, and townspeople returning from rituals emotionally hollow and physically altered.
When Elia secretly follows the city elders into tunnels beneath the harbor, she uncovers the horrifying truth: the saints are not protective idols but ancient parasitic beings sleeping inside the wax, slowly feeding on the memories, personalities, and bodies of the citizens to maintain their enormous forms. Worse, the black ocean outside the city is not the enemy — it is trying to reclaim the creatures before they spread beyond the island. As the annual tide approaches, the saints awaken early, their melting bodies reshaping into towering, grotesque figures that wander the streets at night collecting more "wax" from terrified residents. Elia teams with a rebellious lighthouse keeper whose body is already partially hollowed out by the rituals, and together they attempt to expose the truth before the final ceremonial melting traps the entire city inside the saints forever.
As panic fractures Noctis Cay, the saints ignite the city itself, transforming streets into rivers of molten wax and reshaping citizens into faceless candle servants. Elia discovers her late mother was one of the few who understood the ocean’s purpose and left behind forbidden blueprints for a massive lighthouse lens capable of melting the saints completely. In a nightmarish climax amid collapsing cathedrals and burning harbor towers, Elia uses the lighthouse to summon the black tide into the city. The ocean extinguishes the saints in a violent flood of steam and darkness, but much of Noctis Cay dissolves with them. At dawn, the survivors drift on hardened wax rafts across a calm sea for the first time in generations, while a final shot reveals a tiny, still-burning wax heart floating beneath the waves.
