The Taxidermy Exchange

In 1996 New Orleans, gifted but disgraced taxidermist Evelyn Vane works nights repairing flood-damaged museum specimens while secretly restoring exotic animals for smugglers. When a notorious crime boss dies during a federal raid, rumors spread that he hid millions inside a traveling private exhibit of preserved animals scheduled for auction after Mardi Gras. Evelyn recognizes the boss’s signature stitching patterns and realizes the money is literally sewn into the mounts. Desperate to save her family’s collapsing funeral home, she assembles a strange crew: a veterinary embalmer, a teenage pickpocket obsessed with natural history, a former zoo architect, and a jazz-club getaway driver.

The crew infiltrates the decadent underground auction circuit where wealthy collectors bid on illegal specimens aboard a rotating fleet of riverboats drifting through the Mississippi delta. But every animal conceals more than cash. The crime boss embedded blackmail ledgers, murder evidence, and coded territorial maps inside the bodies, turning the exhibit into a mobile vault coveted by corrupt politicians, cartel couriers, and federal agents alike. As the heist unfolds across swamp docks, flooded warehouses, and candlelit preservation labs, Evelyn discovers the auction’s organizer was once her father’s business partner and may have orchestrated the murder that ruined her family years earlier.

When rival gangs begin tearing apart the collection in a violent scramble for the hidden assets, Evelyn realizes the only way to survive is to publicly expose the entire operation during the auction’s grand finale parade through the French Quarter. She rigs the towering animal displays to burst open mid-procession, showering the streets with hidden evidence while her crew races to escape armed buyers and law enforcement on stolen funeral barges. In the aftermath, the criminal empire collapses under the leaked records, but Evelyn quietly keeps one untouched specimen hidden in her workshop — revealing the fortune was never fully recovered.
