The Velvet Dirge Society

In 1962 Buenos Aires, isolated crime-scene cleaner Alma Vale survives through silence after a childhood injury left her unable to speak. By night, she secretly transcribes melodies she hears in the rhythm of dripping pipes, train brakes, and crowded cafés. After witnessing a powerful judge abruptly shut down a murder investigation, Alma is approached by the Velvet Dirge Society — an underground troupe that stages forbidden midnight musicals based on unsolved crimes, performing in abandoned tango halls for masked audiences who wager on the killer’s identity.

As Alma becomes the company’s musical arranger, she discovers the troupe’s performances contain details never released to the public. Each new production provokes panic among politicians, police officials, and aristocrats who begin turning up dead shortly after opening night. The Society believes someone inside the audience is committing murders to “complete” the endings of the shows. While Alma falls for Lucien, the troupe’s charismatic lead vocalist, she uncovers hidden recordings proving the Society’s founder once worked as a state interrogator who extracted confessions through music and psychological manipulation.

The final performance becomes a trap staged inside the city’s grand opera house during a gala attended by the nation’s elite. Alma realizes the true killer is not a single person, but a network of wealthy patrons using the productions to anonymously order murders through coded applause rhythms embedded in the music. Unable to speak, Alma conducts the orchestra into a deliberate musical disruption that exposes the code live before the audience. As chaos erupts and the conspiracy collapses, Alma finally steps onto the stage alone, conducting a closing requiem that transforms the city’s darkest secrets into public testimony.
