The creature imprints on her, revealing an impossible truth: the annual monsoon has been stolen and imprisoned inside a mechanical storm engine controlled by the wealthy Dominion of Glass. Branded a thief after the kitefish destroys part of the harbor during its escape, Nima flees aboard the Kitefish Caravan, a wandering convoy of airborne traders, musicians, and glider-riders who navigate the planet’s hazardous jetstream deserts.
As the caravan crosses cyclone canyons, upside-down cloud reefs, and abandoned wind temples hanging above the sea, Nima learns the Dominion has drained entire regions to maintain perfect weather over its luxury floating capitals. Pursued by elegant storm-hunters riding razor-wing skiffs, she struggles to control her bond with the kitefish, whose emotions distort the skies around them. Along the journey, she befriends Orvo, a boastful map-chef who cooks edible navigation charts, and Suri, a mute acrobat who communicates through illuminated ribbons flown like miniature kites. Together they uncover ancient evidence that the kitefish once migrated freely, carrying storms across the world to keep nature balanced before humans industrialized the skies.
The final confrontation erupts inside the Eye Forge, a colossal airborne engine suspended within a permanent hurricane. Nima and the caravan launch a desperate assault using handcrafted gliders, living wind lanterns, and hundreds of freed kitefish surging through the storm. Rather than destroy the machine, Nima redirects it, releasing the imprisoned monsoon across the world in a breathtaking cascade of rain, lightning, and blooming desert life.
