Marlene Voss, a retired casino accountant with an obsession for rules and bingo strategy, boards a low-budget tropical cruise hoping for peace and free shrimp. Instead, a navigational blunder leaves her and five other wildly incompatible retirees stranded on the hidden island of Santa Caldera — a bizarre micronation run by Hector Bale, a former children’s TV host who believes the island is destined to become the world’s first floating country. When Hector announces he’ll only let them leave if they retrieve a legendary cache of gold hidden somewhere beneath the island’s volcanic tunnels, the seniors reluctantly form an expedition team.
The journey across Santa Caldera becomes increasingly absurd. The group survives zip-line monks, carnivorous parrots trained to steal jewelry, a booby-trapped jungle mini-golf course, and a network of lava-heated caves filled with abandoned carnival machinery from Hector’s failed theme park empire. Along the way, Marlene discovers she loves the thrill of adventure far more than the predictable life she left behind. Tensions erupt as the group’s personal rivalries and terrible teamwork repeatedly sabotage them, especially when they learn Hector intends to use the treasure to power giant engines that could literally break the island free from the ocean floor.
After accidentally triggering the island’s launch sequence during a massive annual parade, the retirees race through erupting streets aboard stolen parade floats to stop Santa Caldera from drifting into a busy shipping lane. Marlene outsmarts Hector during a final showdown inside a crumbling volcano casino, using his own rigged bingo system against him to expose the treasure’s real location. The group escapes as the island settles safely back into place, but instead of returning home, they invest the treasure into turning Santa Caldera into an outrageously chaotic retirement-adventure resort — with Marlene elected its fiercely competitive new mayor.
