The Girl Without a Shadow

Every evening in the cliffside city of Noctis, citizens’ shadows peel away from their bodies and wander the streets as living reflections of their truest selves. Elian, a shy apprentice who repairs damaged shadow-puppets for the city’s lantern theaters, prefers working in silence rather than risking real connection. During preparations for the annual Dawnwake Festival, he meets Mira, a witty rooftop courier whose shadow never appears. While everyone else sees this as a bad omen, Elian discovers Mira’s missing shadow was stolen years earlier and hidden somewhere within the city’s abandoned underground light tunnels.

As Elian and Mira search the maze beneath Noctis, they encounter forgotten shadows that have evolved into strange, beautiful creatures made of ink, smoke, and paper-cut light. Mira hides the truth that she has begun physically fading with each passing night; without her shadow, she will disappear completely at sunrise on festival day. Along the journey, Elian’s own shadow becomes increasingly bold and romantic, embarrassing him by acting out feelings he cannot say aloud. Their growing bond forces Elian to confront his fear of vulnerability while Mira struggles with the possibility that recovering her shadow could also restore painful memories she buried long ago.

Inside the city’s ancient lighthouse heart, they discover Mira’s shadow willingly left her after a childhood tragedy she could not emotionally survive. Rather than force it back, Elian helps Mira reconcile with the part of herself she abandoned. During the Dawnwake Festival, Mira reunites with her shadow in front of the entire city, causing thousands of detached shadows to illuminate the sky like living constellations. As daylight finally rises, Elian takes Mira’s hand and, for the first time, steps willingly into the sunlight beside someone who truly sees him.
