The Marble Orchard Syndicate

9/10

In a city where memories are stored inside hand-painted marbles, a teenage street sweeper and a retired getaway driver uncover a criminal ring stealing entire childhoods to manufacture perfect alibis.

A highly original and visually rich sci-fi noir concept with strong emotional stakes, commercial animated-film potential, and a coherent high-concept plot that balances mystery, worldbuilding, and spectacle.

Plot

In the animated canal-city of Bellavue, every citizen records treasured memories into delicate glass marbles kept in vast public orchards hanging above the streets. Milo, a shy teenage sanitation worker who cleans broken marbles from alleyways, discovers one that contains footage of a murder no one remembers committing. The memory belongs to a famous judge who insists he has never seen the victim before. Realizing memories can be edited, stolen, and replanted, Milo reluctantly teams up with Vesper Vale, an aging former getaway driver who once worked for Bellavue’s most feared crime family.

Their investigation leads them into the hidden underlayers of the city, where illegal “memory presses” grind stolen experiences into counterfeit identities sold to politicians, thieves, and grieving families. As Milo learns to navigate Bellavue’s surreal criminal underworld of marble smugglers, canal racers, and black-market memory sculptors, he discovers the syndicate is targeting children because their memories are easiest to reshape. Worse, Vesper secretly helped design the system years earlier before disappearing after a heist gone wrong that erased her own daughter from public memory.

When the syndicate plans to overwrite the city’s collective archive during Bellavue’s annual Lantern Flood festival, Milo and Vesper launch a desperate heist aboard a moving cathedral-sized memory barge drifting through glowing canals. Milo broadcasts the stolen original memories across the city, forcing thousands to suddenly remember crimes, betrayals, and loved ones deliberately erased from their lives. Bellavue erupts into chaos, but the syndicate collapses under the weight of restored truth. In the aftermath, Vesper finally recovers fragments of her daughter’s existence, while Milo begins rebuilding the shattered marble orchards into places where memories are protected instead of owned.
