The Gravity Between Tides

On the ocean moon Pelagos, artificial gravity towers keep entire cities anchored against violent tidal inversions that pull seas upward into the atmosphere every night. Mara Venn, a withdrawn orbital engineer maintaining the aging lattice network, lives alone aboard a drifting maintenance ring after losing her brother in a gravity surge years earlier. During a catastrophic inversion that strands thousands inside an airborne floodstorm, Mara rescues daring rescue diver Soren Vale, whose team navigates the impossible tides in magnetized submersibles that can swim through both water and sky.

As the pair investigate the failing lattice, they discover the moon’s gravity core is not malfunctioning naturally — it is slowly destabilizing because the original colonists buried a sentient planetary organism beneath the oceans and built the entire civilization on top of its sleeping nervous system. Every gravity fluctuation is the creature trying to awaken. While corporations prepare to abandon Pelagos and evacuate only the wealthy, Mara and Soren descend through submerged ruins and inverted storm corridors searching for the original interface capable of communicating with the being before the moon collapses into permanent tidal chaos. Along the way, Mara’s rigid isolation and Soren’s reckless optimism evolve into a fragile, deeply intimate bond shaped by shared grief, impossible beauty, and the constant danger of being literally torn apart by the world around them.

When the final lattice fails, entire oceans lift into orbit and cities begin drifting into the sky. Mara realizes the creature beneath Pelagos is not hostile — it has been responding emotionally to humanity’s fear and exploitation for centuries. In a desperate final act, she merges herself with the gravity interface while Soren pilots through a planetwide tidal storm to keep the network stable long enough for contact to occur. Rather than imprison the being again, Mara convinces humanity to coexist with it, permanently transforming Pelagos into a breathtaking world of floating seas and migrating sky currents. Years later, Mara and Soren reunite on the surface beneath an ocean suspended overhead, finally choosing each other over escape.
