The Gloam Market Job

In the crumbling fantasy port-city of Vey, memories are currency. The wealthy preserve their triumphs in crystal vials while the poor sell away grief, love, and even their own identities to survive. Rowan Vale, a once-famous stage illusionist whose failed stunt erased his daughter’s memory of him, is recruited by a masked smuggler to rob the legendary Gloam Market — a secret bazaar that materializes beneath the city during a lunar eclipse and vanishes by dawn. Its ruler, the Collector Saint, stores stolen memories inside living creatures called Lantern Beasts, guarded by oath-bound mercenaries who cannot forget pain.

Rowan assembles an unstable crew: a tunnel-diving dwarf cartographer who maps emotions instead of streets, a runaway noblewoman able to disguise herself by borrowing faces from mirrors, a mute beast-handler who communicates through enchanted smoke, and a cheerful pickpocket cursed to relive the last ten seconds of his life whenever he lies. Their plan is impossible: infiltrate the shifting market, survive auctions where years of life are traded like jewels, and steal a massive archive containing the kingdom’s erased rebellions before the Collector Saint sells them to the monarchy.

As the eclipse deepens, the crew discovers the Collector Saint has secretly erased a generations-long uprising from public memory, turning an entire population obedient through magical forgetting. Rowan finds the memory of his daughter hidden among thousands of stolen lives and realizes reclaiming it will collapse the archive and trap the crew inside the disappearing market forever. During a chaotic chase through folding alleys and collapsing memory vaults, the crew unleashes the stolen memories back into the city, triggering a tidal wave of forgotten truth across the population. Rowan chooses to remain behind inside the fading Gloam Market so his daughter — and the kingdom — can finally remember who they were.
