The Salt Riders of Calavera Basin

After a catastrophic surveying mistake dries up three frontier towns, former government hydrologist Eliza Vale is branded a fraud and run out of New Mexico Territory. When a violent dust season uncovers evidence of a mythical “wandering oasis” — a hidden freshwater lake that shifts location beneath the vast Calavera Salt Basin — Eliza sees a chance at redemption. Her only guide is Tomás Rojas, a blind Yaqui horse thief who navigates the desert using wind patterns, echo clicks, and the taste of minerals in the air. Together they assemble a ragged caravan of smugglers, orphaned telegraph runners, and a former buffalo soldier to cross terrain where compasses fail and entire wagon trains vanish into salt sinkholes.

As they journey deeper into the basin, they discover the oasis is not folklore but the result of a rare underground river system migrating beneath the desert floor. A ruthless private railroad militia led by industrialist Beaumont Creed is hunting it too, intending to dam the hidden water source and force every settlement in the territory into dependence on his rail network. The race becomes a brutal moving siege across shimmering salt plains, abandoned mining scaffolds, and canyon labyrinths carved by ancient floods. Eliza and Tomás begin clashing over whether the oasis should even be revealed to the outside world, especially after discovering an isolated desert community that has secretly protected it for generations.

When Creed captures the oasis and begins constructing a fortified pumping station, Eliza realizes the only way to stop him is to destroy the underground channels entirely, sacrificing the discovery that could restore her reputation. In a climactic battle during a blinding salt cyclone, Tomás leads riders across the collapsing basin while Eliza detonates buried mining charges that redirect the hidden river back beneath the desert. Creed’s fortress disappears into the sinking salt flats, and the surviving towns are forced to rebuild without corporate control. Months later, stories spread across the frontier about ghostly riders carrying barrels of freshwater through the night — though no map can ever find the oasis again.
