Monsoon Line

8/10

A suspended railway inspector must commandeer a failing evacuation train through flood-ravaged insurgent territory while confronting the rebel son he thought dead.

A tense and cinematic disaster-thriller with strong emotional stakes and political intrigue, though some plot elements feel familiar and densely packed.

Plot

In the final weeks of a record-breaking monsoon season, veteran Indian railway inspector Arun Batra is blamed for a catastrophic bridge collapse that kills dozens and ends his career. Living in disgrace in Kolkata, he is reluctantly pulled back into service when unprecedented flooding traps thousands in isolated mountain towns along an abandoned colonial rail line. With government aid delayed and landslides swallowing roads whole, Arun is ordered to guide a rusting emergency train carrying medicine, engineers, and volunteer medics through territory controlled by a violent separatist faction.

As the train pushes deeper into submerged valleys and collapsing tunnels, Arun discovers the rebels are led by his estranged son, Imran, who disappeared years earlier after a brutal political crackdown. Imran plans to destroy the railway bridge ahead to stop military forces from using the evacuation mission as cover for a raid on nearby villages. Father and son clash across flooded rooftops, speeding train cars, and unstable mountain passes while passengers become trapped between armed factions, corrupt officials, and the advancing storm. Forced into uneasy cooperation after a deadly ambush derails part of the train, they uncover evidence that the original bridge collapse was caused by government negligence deliberately hidden to protect a lucrative privatization deal.

With the monsoon crest hours away from obliterating the valley, Arun and Imran lead survivors on a desperate final run across a half-collapsed viaduct while insurgents and military forces converge from both sides. Arun publicly broadcasts the conspiracy using the railway's emergency radio network, exposing the officials responsible and turning public opinion against the operation. In the climax, father and son manually restart the failing locomotive amid rising floodwaters, sacrificing the last intact rail bridge to save the evacuation train and the people aboard. Months later, the destroyed line becomes a memorial route rebuilt by the very communities once divided by it.
