The Paper Moon Parade

Every evening in the cliffside city of Lunara, glowing paper lanterns drift into the sky carrying handwritten confessions, wishes, and memories. Mira, a gifted but painfully introverted apprentice lantern-maker, spends her nights repairing damaged lanterns recovered from the sea below. When several children vanish during the annual Moon Parade, their lanterns inexplicably reappear days later—charred black and folded into impossible shapes containing cryptic warnings written in the children’s own handwriting.

As panic spreads through the city, Mira secretly teams up with Ren, an energetic street performer whose younger sister is among the missing. Following hidden symbols embedded in the lantern folds, they uncover an abandoned network of tunnels beneath Lunara once used by the city’s original lantern guild. There, they discover a forgotten machine capable of preserving moments in paper form—memories, conversations, even fragments of future events. Someone has reactivated it and is using the Moon Parade to identify children capable of seeing these future echoes before disasters occur.

The trail leads to the city’s beloved festival director, who believes sacrificing a handful of children to the machine will allow him to predict catastrophes and save thousands. During the climactic Moon Parade, Mira turns the city’s sky into a living mosaic of projected memories, exposing the truth to all of Lunara. By refolding the damaged lanterns into new forms, she disrupts the machine’s control and rescues the missing children, though the final lantern drifting overhead hints that the future is still quietly watching the city in return.
