The Fifth Stair

8/10

A small‑town court reporter uncovers a string of “accidental” deaths tied to her own transcripts—forcing her to expose a buried judicial conspiracy before she becomes the next case file.

A fresh and atmospheric conspiracy thriller with strong commercial hooks and emotional stakes, though its complex mythology risks needing tight execution to stay coherent.

Plot

Ellie Keene, a meticulous court reporter in a quiet Rust Belt town, begins noticing subtle discrepancies in her old trial transcripts—strange phrases she never typed, missing lines, and odd symbols inserted only seconds before defendants died in freak accidents. When a local mechanic, recently acquitted, falls to his death after uttering one of the mysterious phrases, Ellie suspects someone is manipulating the courtroom record to orchestrate murders that look like fate.

She confides in Jonah Hart, a disgraced former prosecutor scraping by as a public defender. Their uneasy partnership leads them through case archives, abandoned municipal buildings, and sealed evidence rooms. They uncover a covert network of judicial insiders—“The Fifth Stair”—who believe they’re cleansing the community by engineering “accidents” for those they deem beyond justice. As Ellie digs deeper, she finds her own late father, a beloved judge, may have been involved in the conspiracy’s origins, and her transcripts reveal she’s been unknowingly recording coded instructions for the next death: hers.

In a final confrontation during a dangerous courthouse lockdown, Ellie and Jonah expose the cabal by feeding false transcript cues that turn the assassins against one another. Ellie survives, but must testify publicly about the conspiracy, shattering her father’s legacy while freeing the town from its secret executioners. The truth costs her dearly, yet she emerges as the community’s reluctant moral compass—determined to rebuild a justice system she almost died trying to reveal.

Poster Prompt

A rain‑dampened small‑town courthouse at dusk, looming and oppressive. At the foreground, Ellie Keene—early 30s, sharp‑eyed, brown hair in a loose bun, clutching a notepad—stands on the courthouse steps, one stair slightly darker than the rest. Dim golden streetlights cast long, eerie shadows. Ghostly fragments of typed transcript pages swirl subtly around her, illuminated by cool blue light. Cinematic, high‑contrast lighting with a muted, noir‑inspired color palette of deep blues, warm ambers, and charcoal grays. Atmosphere tense, dramatic, and grounded—realistic texture with a hint of psychological unease.
