The Case of the Missing Corpse (…Kind Of)

8/10

When a neurotic small‑town funeral director discovers a corpse has vanished from his morgue, he teams up with an overly enthusiastic true‑crime podcaster to solve the disappearing‑dead mystery before the town’s Founders Day Parade turns into a public scandal.

A highly original and entertaining comedic mystery with strong commercial potential, though its farcical elements may require tight scripting to maintain coherence.

Plot

Morris Pennington, the anxious, hyper‑organized funeral director of the sleepy town of Willowbrook, arrives for work one morning to discover something horrifying: the body scheduled for that afternoon’s viewing has disappeared. There are no signs of forced entry, no broken locks—just a corpse‑shaped outline on the gurney where condensation used to be. Terrified of losing his license and being socially annihilated in a town where gossip moves faster than ambulances, Morris reluctantly teams up with Tabitha “Tabby” Hart, a chaotic true‑crime podcaster who sees the case as her big break.

As Morris and Tabby interrogate eccentric townsfolk, follow a trail of bizarre clues, and bumble through wildly contradictory alibis, they slowly uncover that the “dead man” wasn’t dead at all—but a notorious local scam artist who faked his death to escape debts owed to both a bingo‑fixing grandmas’ syndicate and a friendly but terrifying alpaca farmer. Their investigation spirals into absurdity: stakeouts hidden inside parade floats, chase scenes involving runaway mobility scooters, and an accidental arson incident at a pottery studio.

Just as the Founders Day Parade is about to begin, Morris and Tabby finally corner the supposedly dead man hiding inside a fifty‑foot papier‑mâché badger. After a slapstick showdown involving confetti cannons and a marching‑band drumline, the culprit is exposed, the town is saved from scandal, and Morris discovers he’s braver—and weirder—than he ever thought. Tabby gets her story, Morris gets his confidence, and Willowbrook gets the most talked‑about parade in its history.

Mood: quirky mystery with lighthearted energy. Style: cinematic but playful, reminiscent of offbeat detective comedies.
