Inkbound Pulse

8/10

In a city where every animated creation must obey its maker, a timid young animator’s rebellious sketch comes to life—and begins hunting the artists who try to erase him.

A highly original and visually striking concept with strong emotional stakes, though its dark themes may limit broad commercial appeal despite solid coherence and entertainment value.

Plot

In the sprawling neon district of Penumbra City, 17‑year‑old animator Lira Calder works at the state-run Dreamframe Studio, where artists produce living, loyal cartoons used for propaganda and entertainment. Tired of perfectionism and control, she sketches a messy, impulsive character named Rag—a scribbled figure bursting with personality. But when an electrical surge animates Rag off the page, he shows a dangerous trait no cartoon should have: free will. Soon, other artists report missing creations, and Lira realizes Rag is growing stronger by absorbing discarded animations.

As fear spreads through the studio, Dreamframe’s ruthless director orders Rag terminated. But Rag, desperate not to be erased, begins striking first—targeting the creators who treat their characters like disposable tools. Lira, guilt‑ridden and terrified, teams up with an aging cleanup artist who knows the city's hidden animation archives. Together, they navigate ink-choked tunnels and forgotten film vaults, uncovering that Dreamframe has long suppressed rebellious cartoons—imprisoned beings who remember their creators’ cruelty.

Lira finally confronts Rag in the city’s central ink reservoir, where he threatens to unleash thousands of vengeful sketches. She pleads with him, admitting her own fear of imperfection, and offers him creative autonomy instead of control. Rag accepts—but only after forcing Dreamframe’s truth into the open. In the aftermath, Penumbra City reforms its animation laws, giving creations agency, while Lira becomes the first artist to openly collaborate with a living cartoon who chooses his own story.
