The Long Shadow at Last Stop

8/10

When a fading frontier town’s sheriff vanishes at sundown, a scarred drifter and a sharp‑tongued stagecoach girl uncover a decades‑old trail of secret justice that someone is killing to keep buried.

A fresh twist on a Western mystery with strong characters and solid thematic stakes, though its commercial appeal may be somewhat niche

Plot

Last Stop, New Mexico Territory, 1874: a dying rail spur town where folks keep their heads down and the desert keeps its secrets. When Sheriff Amos Cutter disappears during a dust storm as sudden as it is unnatural, trouble‑worn drifter Jedediah Ward is blamed for the vanishing. Only Molly Finch, the stubborn stagecoach dispatcher who saw the sheriff ride toward the abandoned copper pits, believes something stranger is at play.

As Jed and Molly follow Cutter’s trail into the desert, they uncover evidence of a clandestine ‘shadow court’ the sheriff once ran, delivering off‑the‑books justice to outlaws who evaded the law. But each pit and canyon holds whispers of people who were never brought to jail—only judged and buried. When the pair find Cutter’s badge hanging over a fresh grave, they realize someone is resurrecting the shadow court’s old cases and eliminating anyone tied to them.

With the town turning hostile and a masked judge stalking the desert by moonlight, Jed and Molly must unravel which of Cutter’s forgotten verdicts returned to claim vengeance. In a tense showdown across the copper pit terraces, they corner the killer—a survivor of the shadow court’s earliest sentence. Jed spares his life, exposing the truth and forcing Last Stop to reckon with justice done in darkness. As dawn breaks, Jed rides on, leaving Molly and the town with a chance at a more honest future.

Poster Prompt

Cinematic Western mystery poster. A rugged, broad‑shouldered drifter with dusty coat, bandaged knuckles, and a weather‑beaten visage stands beside a determined young woman with red bandana, battered ledger book, and holstered revolver. Behind them: an abandoned copper pit at dusk, long shadows stretching like claws. Color palette of burnt oranges, deep slate blues, and dusty browns. Hard sunlight slicing through dust clouds, creating a stark, moody atmosphere. Visual style reminiscent of late‑60s Westerns mixed with noir mystery—gritty textures, dramatic silhouettes, and a faint figure of a masked rider lurking in the background haze.
